Interview with Nicolas Rossignol: Between Nature and Sound Design
The Argentine producer reflects on inspiration, discipline, and artistic freedom
Hello Nicolas, how are you today, and what have you been up to lately, both musically and personally?
Hello, good morning, thank you in advance. Today I am experiencing a beautiful rainy day here. These are reflective days, and they always inspire me to produce or explore new sounds, new music in general. I am dividing my time between being with my family, who mean everything to me, thank God, and producing in our workspace.
Can you take us back to the beginning, when did you first start making music, and what sparked your interest in electronic music at such a young age?
It all started in my childhood, long before adolescence. I grew up listening to a lot of high-quality music, experimental rock from the 60s, blues, grunge, and more. I remember seeing boxes and boxes of cassettes at home, it was crazy. They contained really unusual and exotic music.
When I was about eight or nine years old, we moved to the city of Quilmes. At that time, thanks to my sister’s boyfriend, I had friends who would sometimes come over to set up sound systems. They brought samplers, drum machines, all analog. I was fascinated from that moment on. I do not think digital audio workstations existed then. A whole new world opened up to me. We listened to a lot of electronic music while playing Quake 3 Arena on LAN or Starcraft and other games. Beautiful memories. Later, the first digital audio workstations started to appear. Observing my surroundings and asking questions, I began to experiment with them and also to try to create my own music.
You are based in Buenos Aires, a city with a very strong electronic music culture. How has your local scene influenced your sound and artistic direction?
Yes, I am in Buenos Aires, but in a rural area, away from the city but close to it at the same time. It is true, Argentina is a place where electronic music is very strong in all its branches. It is very influential for me, as are other artists from abroad. All sounds are influential for me.
